After the Removal of Multiple Teeth
Woodland Hills, CA

Unfortunately, most of us will need restorative treatment at some point in their lives, which may include the removal of multiple teeth. While we always try to prevent the need for extractions, in some instances, removing multiple teeth may be the only way to improve your oral health. If you do need multiple extractions, we here at Woodland Hills Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery will use the latest technology and techniques to provide a safe, effective, and comfortable experience.

WHY WE SUGGEST TOOTH EXTRACTIONS

SWe may suggest a tooth extraction, specifically multiple extractions simultaneously, to address a number of issues. The most common reasons for the removal of multiple teeth include:

  • Tooth decay or cavities so severe the tooth is beyond saving
  • A severe infection of the pulpy substance deep within the root, which is largely responsible for the life of a tooth
  • Wisdom teeth, or third molars, which often cause additional problems for your surrounding teeth and soft tissues
  • Crowding issues that make it harder to properly brush and floss, putting your teeth at risk for infection or decay
  • Periodontal, or gum disease, which causes irreparable damage to your gums, connective ligaments, jawbone, and other supportive structures
  • Certain medications and cancer treatments like chemotherapy that increase your risk of a tooth infection due to a compromised immune system

IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWING YOUR EXTRACTIONS

The length and extent of your healing process depends on the type of extractions we perform. The two extractions procedures include:

  • Simple extractions: During this procedure, we use a hand tool known as an elevator to separate an exposed tooth from the bone, gums, and supportive ligaments. Next we use forceps, to remove the tooth from its socket.
  • Surgical Extractions: During this procedure, we make a small incision in the gums to remove a tooth that has not erupted above the gums. The tooth in question is usually broken up into several pieces, making the extraction easier and more effective.

Regardless of which procedure you need, your extraction sites will be packed with gauze following your treatment. Before you leave or office, we will give you a detailed set of care instructions designed to reduce your risk of post-operative complications. We may also give you a prescription for antibiotics and pain medication.

Bleeding, swelling, and discomfort during the first 24 to 48 hours is normal. If any of these issues fail to subside or worsen after the first week or two, be sure to give us a call as soon as possible.

You can reduce your risk of dislodging your blood clots by avoiding chew foods and implementing a soft foods diet. You should also avoid drinking liquids from a straw. To limit your discomfort, stick to foods and beverages that are not too hot or too cold and take your medications as prescribed.

TEETH REPLACEMENT OPTIONS

While no one wants to undergo multiple extractions, it’s also never been easier to replace missing teeth. In the past, conventional bridges and removable dentures (partial and complete) were the only restorations that could be used for multiple missing teeth. Thanks to the advent of new technology and techniques, dental implants are now the industry standard.

The type of restoration we recommend after the removal of multiple missing teeth varies from patient to patient. Talk with Dr. Robert G. Hale to learn more about your replacement options during your initial consultation.
